what they built
Re-reading notes doesn’t stick. Study Island turns them into a world you play through. What it does: Drop in PDFs, slides, photos of handwritten notes or pasted text. Claude reads everything, groups it into 4–8 topics, and each topic rises out of the ground as a themed building (lighthouse, bakery, library, observatory and more) on a low-poly 3D island. Click a building or walk your character to its door, and learn each concept through quick mini-games built from your notes: Slope Rider: match tangent slopes. Area Catcher: estimate integrals with rectangles. Graph Match: catch the derivative’s graph. Concept Sort: drag cards into the right bins. Boss Duel: a timed quiz battle at the end of each building. Explain It Back: Claude grades your explanation and fixes misconceptions. Every mistake shows a quote from your own notes. Mastery rings track progress, scores save in the browser (no login), and there’s an island leaderboard. Try a sample island (Calculus or Biology) instantly. How we built it: Next.js, React Three Fiber and Framer Motion, deployed on Vercel. Reading notes: Claude Sonnet reads PDFs and images directly. Building the island: Claude plans the island with forced tool use, then builds every building in parallel. Prompt caching means the notes are only paid for once, and results stream in so buildings rise one by one. Grading: Claude Haiku grades answers and gives hints. Trust: Claude never writes game code. It fills six hand-built engines with validated JSON, and every graded math answer is checked with math.js, so students never get a wrong answer key. What Devin did: Devin set up the architecture and shared data format, then ran 13 parallel subagents, one per workstream: the island world, buildings, player, the Claude pipeline, the UI, audio and progress, each of the six game engines, and QA. It merged their work through 11 pull requests, then ran a cloud integration sprint to wire everything together, polish it and deploy.
